What Truly Matters Is Not That We Know Heaven, but That Heaven Knows Us
“Please lend me some food because I know the President. If you think I’m lying, look—I even have his mobile phone number.” These were the words spoken by a close friend of mine in 2019 as he shared the story of a man who used to borrow food from various shops, claiming that he was acquainted with the President.
But does possessing the President’s mobile phone number truly mean that the President knows him? It is certainly good to know the President of the country in which I live; however, it is far more meaningful if the President himself knows me, because that recognition is what gives me true significance. In other words, being known by the President carries greater value than merely claiming to know him (This is my personal reflection).
What Matters Is Not That We Know Heaven, but That Heaven Knows Us
“For our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we eagerly await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20). Some people within the church often quote this scripture to demonstrate their understanding that heaven is our true home. However, simply knowing about heaven is not undeniable proof that heaven also recognizes us.
One day, while reading the novel Devil on the Cross by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, I came across a passage that states: “Covering holes with tree leaves, even while knowing that holes lie beneath them, does not prevent our children from playing there and eventually falling in.”
Reflecting on Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s words, I realized that claiming to know that our home is in heaven while heaven does not know us is much like playing on ground that conceals a pit covered with fragile leaves. What happens afterward is predictable: sooner or later, one falls into the pit, having mistaken it for ordinary ground.
Conclusion
If I continually say that I know the President of my country, would that truly capture people’s attention and make them eager to listen to me? Yet if I were to say that the President knows me, people would likely become curious and want to hear how such a thing came to be.
In the same way, we must remember that possessing extensive knowledge of the Holy Scriptures is good. However, living according to those Scriptures is far greater, because it is the true mark of those who genuinely believe in Jesus.
