“Show us a sign of what you are saying!”
This statement might sound familiar—you may have heard someone say it or even used it yourself. In today’s world, both believers and non-believers often share a common tendency: denial. Whether being warned about harmful behaviors or being told of their consequences, many choose to ignore the message unless tangible signs are provided. Only then do they consider believing.
Noah’s Time
As soon as you hear the name Noah, you probably picture a large ark being filled with people and animals (Genesis 7:12–13). The Bible does not clearly state that Noah invited the general public to enter the ark, nor do we find any record of God instructing him to invite others besides his immediate family.
However, 2 Peter 2:5 gives us an important clue: “…if He did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others…”
Though Scripture does not detail the sermons Noah preached, this verse strongly suggests that Noah, as a preacher of righteousness, likely warned people to repent and escape the coming judgment. It is highly probable that he also told them that safety could only be found inside the ark.
One song from the Salvation Hymnal, hymn number 38, imagines people questioning Noah:
“Noah, why are you building that ark? What foolishness! You live on a mountain, and there is no water here. What you are doing makes no sense to us!”
From a purely rational perspective, their doubt almost seems understandable. These people had never seen rain before—so they dismissed Noah’s warning about a coming flood as absurd. Their denial was based on the fact that no sign (like rainfall) had ever occurred, so they concluded it never would.
In other words: “There is no convincing evidence that what God told Noah will actually happen.”
But despite the lack of visible signs, the flood did come—just as God had said.
Conclusion
Just as people in Noah’s day rejected the warning because there was no visible sign, so it is today. Many demand solid evidence before believing the teachings or warnings presented to them. They assume that if there is no proof, the message must be false.
But the absence of a sign doesn’t mean God’s word will not be fulfilled. So, do not harden your heart just because you haven’t seen a sign. Those who rejected Noah’s message ended up perishing. That’s why the Bible says: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” (Hebrews 3:15)
Instead: “Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins…” (Acts 2:38)
