Making the Right Choice
As we discussed in the first part of this series, many believers assert that a person of faith should never experience suicidal thoughts or act on them. However, Scripture reveals that some figures, even those with a strong relationship with God, struggled with thoughts of despair and, at times, contemplated the end of their own lives.
Before delving into specific examples, let me remind you that an act of suicide is often preceded by persistent thoughts of hopelessness and even planning. This is why we sometimes focus solely on the act of suicide without addressing the underlying thoughts and the planning that led to it.
In offering support to someone who has attempted or is struggling with such thoughts, it is vital to understand the mental battles they faced before the act. These thoughts are the root, and addressing them can be more impactful than focusing on the act alone.
Elijah
“But he went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, saying, ‘It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.’” (1 Kings 19:4).
As mentioned earlier, every act of self-harm is preceded by deep internal thoughts. Exhausted and discouraged, Elijah prayed to end his life. In my 2022 research, one finding was that a major cause of suicidal thoughts is the inability to envision a hopeful future. Elijah, if he had seen beyond his immediate circumstances, might have found the strength to carry on. It was his lack of vision for a brighter tomorrow that led him into despair.
Perhaps you, too, are reading this because of challenges and struggles on your spiritual journey. You might have even prayed for God to take you, thinking it would be better if an accident occurred or if you simply didn’t wake up. Resist the urge to dwell on such thoughts of despair.
Moses
“If You treat me like this, please kill me here and now—if I have found favor in Your sight—and do not let me see my wretchedness.” (Numbers 11:15).
In my research in 2022, another common finding was that people often fear the prospect of enduring more suffering, which leads them to consider suicide. Moses himself feared the hardships that lay ahead, which pushed him towards thoughts of despair.
Do not allow fear of suffering to consume you. Remember, the hardships caused by sin are overcome through repentance, while the trials that arise from righteousness serve to strengthen your faith and bring glory in the end. Resist the urge to contemplate suicide due to fear of future challenges.
Job
“Then You frighten me with dreams and terrify me through visions, so that my soul chooses strangling and death rather than my body. I loathe my life; I would not live forever. Let me alone, for my days are but a breath.” (Job 7:14-16).
Job spoke candidly about his desire to end his life, admitting that he could no longer find joy in living. His prolonged illness and suffering had worn him down. Many studies highlight that long-term, incurable illnesses can lead individuals to contemplate or attempt suicide. However, remember that suffering is not the end; don’t give up on life because of illness.
Saul
“Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, ‘Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and abuse me.’ But his armor-bearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. Therefore, Saul took his own sword and fell on it. When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword, and died with him.” (1 Samuel 31:4-5).
King Saul, too, was chosen by God, yet his life ended in despair, driven by fear of facing his enemies. As mentioned earlier, some people consider taking their own lives out of fear of confronting their problems. Perhaps, you, too, sometimes wish not to face another day, feeling overwhelmed by persistent, seemingly unending challenges. Resist the temptation to give up because of fear; face your struggles with courage.
Conclusion
A doctor examines a patient, diagnoses their condition, and prescribes medication, A doctor examines a patient, diagnoses an illness, and prescribes medication. They instruct the patient to take the medication after each meal. The patient thanks the doctor but mentions that they haven’t been told where to get the food needed before taking the medicine!
Similarly, if I do not point you to sources of help, I would be like the doctor who only highlighted the problem without offering a solution.
